For those who prefer to be a little closer to the abundance of natural beauty central Mississippi has to offer, the 40-acre Nature Park is located adjacent to Winner’s Circle on Flowood Drive. Inside the main entrance is a rest area with covered picnic tables, water fountains and restrooms. Several covered pavilions provide picnic spots and relief from the sun. The primary building inside the park is an open-sided classroom that features soaring overhead birdhouses, and provides an expansive view of the park’s main focal point – a 10-acre central lake and fountain.
The lake provides natural habitat for ducks and other waterfowl, as well as native amphibians and reptiles. A paved, distance-marked walking trail runs exactly one mile from the parking lot around the lake and into a wooded area on the rear of the park. There the trail weaves through a mature hardwood forest with wooden benches and picnic spots accenting the way. The path then returns to the lake at a beautifully designed overwalk, designed to give the traveler a birds-eye view of a wetlands area, and a striking panorama of the entire development.
Throughout the Park are well-designed directional signs, small placards identifying various flora, and several educational panels to inform the visitor about native wildlife that occupy the site. The planners have also built habitats for assorted waterfowl, birds, ground-dwellers and even bat-houses.
